Examples of landscapes by artists born in the twentieth century:
Ansel Adams (American, 1902-1984). See photography.
Balthus (born Balthasar Klossowski de Rola) (French, 1908-2001), Large Landscape with a Tree, 1957, oil on canvas, 130.5 x 162 cm, Georges Pompidou Center, Paris.
Andrew Wyeth, Dodges Ridge, 1947, egg tempera on fiberboard, 41 x 48 inches (104.2 x 122.0 cm).
Richard Diebenkorn (American, 1922-1993)
Neil Welliver (American, 1929-), Mud on Ice, 1981, oil on canvas, 60 x 60 inches, Portland Art Museum, ME.
Robert Smithson (American, 1938-1973), Spiral Jetty, 1970, black basalt rocks, earth and salt crystals, coil: 1,500 x 15 feet, stretching out counterclockwise into the translucent red water of Great Salt Lake, UT. As yet this has not been done. Spiral Jetty was acquired by Dia Center for the Arts as a gift from the artist's estate in 1999. Robert Smithson's estate maintains a page about this and other works. Smithson didn't actually depict scenery. He altered the land itself. The way most of us experience such earth art, however, is through photographic documentation of it. See earth art and volute.
John Pfahl (American, born 1939), Triangle, Bermuda, 1975, from the Altered Landscapes portfolio, 22/100, photograph, dye transfer print, 7 1/4 x 9 7/8 inches (18.4 x 25 cm), Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Anselm Kiefer (German, 1945-), Bohemia Lies by the Sea, 1996, oil, emulsion, shellac, charcoal and powdered paint on burlap, overall: 75 1/4 x 221 inches (191.1 x 561.3 cm); two panels, each: 75 1/4 x 110 1/2 inches (191.1 x 280.7 cm), Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. See Neo-Expressionism.
