A 28-million-word production, fifteen years in the making, published
in October, 1996. Its 34 volumes weigh 168 pounds. Written by
6,700 scholars, its 32,600 pages contain 41,000 articles, 15,000
images and 720,000 index entries. John Russell, reviewing it
in the New York Times, recommended it, saying it's "for
the omnivorous esthete." Although mainly intended for institutions,
any art lover off the street can buy it for something less than
the original price of $8,800. Grove's dictionary is available
on the Internet on a subscription basis -- several hundred dollars
per year. Libraries interested in up-to-date pricing are really
best off calling for information -- 800-221-2123). But
for an individual user, the pricing is as follows: $295
a year, or $30 a month. In addition, there are free 24-hour
trials available to all. (For institutions, the trial period
is 30 days.) Individuals can sign up by following links
from the groveart.com home page, or by visiting e-grove.com.
