We have been enjoying a very mild, balmy spell in Melbourne given the time of year it is. The past 4-5 days have all been above 20C, well above the May average and so we decided we really had to make the most of this! So yesterday we jumped in the car and headed to the Yarra Valley. The first stop was the historic homestead and museum of Mont de Lancey in Wandin North. Funny enough my grandparents once lived around the corner on a rhubarb farm but I don’t ever recall visiting this place while they were there. With plenty to see around the property, the gorgeous ‘Savoia’ cafe to enjoy afternoon tea (which we did!) and gaze out to distant mountains of the Great Dividing Range, it really was a tranquil Autumn afternoon. We finished up at St Huberts winery drinking a nice glass of Chardonnay among the Autumn leaves. :)

A recent break took me to Port Douglas in far north Queensland. An area of Australia I was yet to explore. The furthest north I’d been was Magnetic Island (twice) off the coast from Townsville. We enjoyed (my husband and I) 8 days with no work or kids to enjoy the surrounds of Port Douglas and boy, did we indulge! I was very impressed with Port Douglas and whilst it was more developed than I had expected, it proudly retained many of its historical buildings and features. One in particular caught my eye was the gorgeous historical chapel, St Mary’s by the Sea. Surrounded by lush tropical plants and only meters from the waters edge.

One Great Reason to Visit Ballarat

Your Ballarat experience will never be complete without a visit to the city’s most famous attraction: Sovereign Hill. Sovereign Hill is a man-made open air museum that showcases life in the 1800s when the gold rush was in full swing.

Have fun exploring over 60 historically accurate buildings all across this complex while interacting with the costumed personnel to get the most out of your experience. Dig for gold, explore the mines, visit the tents, and buy souvenirs at the shop.

Before you leave, make sure to watch the multi-million dollar production Blood on the Southern Cross. This lights and sounds extravaganza centres on the events leading up to the Eureka uprising which most experts credit as heralding the birth of democracy for all of Australia.
