Cape Canaveral is situated on the coast in the south/eastern State of Florida, U.S.A. Cape Canaveral is featuring today because it’s in celebration of NASA’s 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and Neil Armstrong becoming the first man to step on the moon.

The area is most well-known for the ‘Kennedy Space Centre’ built in 1962 on Merritt Island. The area was renamed during 1963 to Cape Kennedy following J.F Kennedy’s assassination. However, never a popular move, during 1973 it reverted back to Cape Canaveral with the space centre only retaining the Kennedy name.

The historic Cape Canaveral lighthouse was built back in 1847 but during the 1880s, shoreline erosion threatened the structure and so it was moved to its present location during 1894. Another attraction of the area are the coastal beaches and further south from Cape Canaveral is the popular travel destination of Cocoa Beach.

    2. I have no memory of this major event, for I was only a toddler. It would have been riveting TV viewing and still sends chills up my spine every time I watch the footage. Truly amazing stuff!
