Keeping a Betta fish in a Vase usually requires a vase with a peace lily plant.
Also, place a few marbles in the vase either located at the very bottom of the vase or in sitting in a tray housed on top of the betta vase.
This is all the rage right now. Everybody who thinks that there trendy or shick, are buying one of these types of vases along with flashy ornaments and accessories.
You will oftentimes see a betta fish vase in a friends home, office and place of work.
True. A "Betta in a Vase" looks quite wonderful (on say a coffee table or on a table in your dining room) but truthfully speaking, it's really quite unhealthy for any Betta
It's also considered inhumane because the Betta fish actually suffers in a small vase. Don't listen to sales people who insist that your Betta will be alright being in the vase.
But are they really alright?
Let’s consider for a moment the life of a betta fish living in a small vase.
To start with, bettas require more room than you'd think. Bettas also need quite a lot of space within there living environment. They have to stretch out their fins in order to get enough exercise.
In the case of a small vase it really limits a bettas movement, and can result in them... damaging their beautiful fins.
NOTE: Bettas need more Oxygen than a small Vase can provide for them.
It's true that Bettas can obtain sufficient oxygen either from fresh water or from their respiratory gland which allows them to breath air from the atmosphere if say the oxygen levels in their water are extremely low.
But what most people fail to understand is, for the Betta fish to use it's respiratory gland, it will require direct and open access to the atmosphere.
Another important consideration is the use of a peace lily plant which has a tendency to eventually wither and die off, thereby releasing deadly toxins into the Bettas water. Usually the toxins will have an dramatic and fatal effect on a Betta fish placed in a small vase.
On the subject of the Bettas food intake and care you need to know that when a Betta is in its natural surroundings and habitat its diet consists mainly of insects and insect larvae.
The Betta fish’s digestive tract is... designed to digest meats. Keeping a Betta in a small vase requires regular feeding and care. You should feed it with freeze-dried bloodworms or frozen fish to ensure its ongoing health and well-being. When a Betta is starved for food it becomes desperate, and will even resort to feeding on the lily roots when there is nothing else available to feed on.
If this occurs, the Betta fish will eventually become unhealthy and die.
You must ensure that your Betta isn't deprived of nutrients or it may succumb to fin rot and other diseases. If you still decide to keep your Betta fish in a vase then the same considerations given to a Bettas life in a tank should be followed.
Any leftover old food should be siphoned out so that the vase water doesn't get contaminated. It should be replenished with fresh water containing water conditioners. If this is not done, it will result in the death of your pet Betta. The vase cannot be viewed in the same light as that of natural waters. A vase requires frequent cleaning and this should be done at least once a week!
Key Point: Betta fish require suitable water temperature.
This is a factor that's oftentimes overlooked by those who keep Bettas in a vase. Betta fish will thrive... in hot, moist climates and especially in water that's kept at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bettas can survive at lower temperatures but they get lethargic and will STOP eating. So, if you don't live in a warmer climate, you must watch the temperature range so that it remains constant, and the Betta then can thrive in its environment.
