Sonoran Sky's 1996-97 First Grade Students made

with the assistance of their art teacher, Mr. Delahunt.
Here is a gallery of some of those pictures!

The Lesson:
As a parallel to the focus of their social studies curriculum, this year these students will be making
*self-portrait *paintings and *sculptures, as well as these portraits of their families. Students used *crayons to *draw all the members of their households on 8 x 10 1/2 inch sheets of white *paper, cut each *figure out, and glue them onto a similarly sized sheet of colored construction paper. Then they had many options in making changes to the *background-- including cutting and gluing pieces of colored papers, crayons and *tempera paints.

Students' Names, and their classroom teachers:
are listed by their first name and the initial letter of the last name, followed by a code for their first grade classroom teacher--

  • 1N = Mrs. Northrop and Ms O'Brien
  • 1H = Mrs. Hanrahan
  • 1C = Mrs. Cunningham
  • 1P = Mrs. Pantera
  • * Links to definitions of art terms:
Any word that is linked with an asterisk (
*) beside it connects to a page where you will find that word's definition in ArtPage, the online dictionary of art Mr. Delahunt has written and posted on the Net.

These were made partly for a fund-raiser:

These pictures were sent to a company which created a photo-reduction of each picture mounted on a magnet. Each student took these things home along with an order form with which families could purchase the magnet if they chose. Whether they did or not, it was a valuable experience for students of art to see their works reproduced. Families could order other products on which the company would print a *reproduction of the child's picture. These products include T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, mugs, aprons, calendars, greeting cards, and mouse pads! Even with the smallest mark-up, this fund-raiser has been very helpful to our art program, permitting us to *frame some students' work, and to acquire various art supplies, art reproductions, and computer software.
