These lessons can enable students
to meet
Arizona Academic Standards
Our state government adopted the Arizona Academic Standards in the Visual Arts
in 1997 in order to ensure academic excellence. These standards
establish benchmarks for what students should know and be able
to do.
The lessons in this sculpture unit have been designed to enable
students to develop the skills necessary to meet the three Visual
Arts standards with proficiency in grades 9-12. The numbers following
the descriptions of each skill refer to the lessons (1, 2, 3,
4, and 5) in this sculpture unit
which have been targeted to develop those skills.
Standard 1: Creating Art
Students know and apply the arts, disciplines, techniques and
processes to communicate in original or interpretive work.
- Create works of art that apply media, techniques and processes
with controlled skill, craftsmanship, confidence, understanding
and sensitivity. Lessons: 2,
3, 4, and 5.
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of skills and techniques
in at least one visual art form. Lessons: 2, 3,
4, and 5.
- Reflect on and articulate reasons for artistic decisions.
Lessons: 2, 3, 4, and 5.
- Sustain a portfolio of created work demonstrating the progression
of knowledge and skills. Lessons: 2,
3, 4, and 5
(if the instructor requires this).
Standard 2: Art in Context

political, time, and place) influence and give meaning to the
development and reception of thought, ideas and concepts in the
arts.
- Analyze and interpret how elements of time and place influence
the visual characteristics, content, purpose and message of works
of art. Lessons: 1,
3, 4, and 5.
- Describe the function and meaning of specific art objects
within varied cultures, times and places. Lessons: 1, 2,

in the visual arts and other disciplines (e.g., humanities, science,
mathematics) influence the creation of work. Lessons: 2 and 3.
- Identify and evaluate the role of the visual arts and artists
in business, industry, technology and the community. Lessons:
3.
- Analyze contemporary art issues and influences on own work
and that of others. Lessons: 3

Standard 3: Art as Inquiry
Students demonstrate how the arts reveal universal concepts
and themes. Students reflect upon and assess the characteristics
and merits of their work and the work of others.
- Identify and critique the reasons for the success or need
for improvement in a progression of their own works. Lesson:
4.
- Compare and explain the power of the visual arts to communicate
universal concepts (e.g., love, birth, death, truth, fear) through
time and across cultures. Lesson: 5.
- Identify intentions of those creating artworks, compare implications
of the various purposes, and justify analysis of purposes in
particular artworks. Lessons: 1,
2, 3, and 4.

of the visual arts with those of other arts disciplines and subject
areas to create and analyze artworks. Lesson: 5.
